LESSON 9 OF 12 · Special moves

The passing capture

If an enemy pawn moves two squares and lands beside your pawn on its fifth rank, you may capture it as though it moved one square. This right lasts for your very next move only.

A useful habit

En passant is an immediate opportunity, not a lasting right.

Your move

Capture en passant: move your pawn from e5 to d6.
